This album cover makes me think of H.P. Lovecraft.
Haken is a band that I learned about at last years Prog Power because they will be playing this year at Prog Power XII.
I like this band. But I will not lie…it took several listens to the disc to make up my mind. This is not one of those albums that you are going to put on and be like “Hell Yeah…that is the SHIT, Yo.” (O.K. some of you might…but not most of you). But after really spending some time with it, I have been able to really come to enjoy it and its uniqueness.
Perhaps unique is not quite the right word. Haken gives us plenty of what we have heard before…but, I can not quite recall hearing it put together this way. For example…how many of you have enjoyed Chocolate Covered Asparagus. We have all had chocolate before and most of us have had asparagus before…but very few of us have probably tried them together.
And while the above example might make you want to barf…the Haken album turns out great. So what does it sound like? It is a mixture of Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Mr. Bungle, Riverside, and Hans Zimmer. They do a pretty good job at taking the things I like from all of those folks.
If you are looking for heavy prog metal…this is not it. If you are looking for Prog Rock…this is still probably not it. If you want to try something a little different and are willing to sit with it long enough to really make up your mind…than I recommend this highly.
Tracks I kept:
