Yep…that is exactly how I felt while we quantized drum parts on “Killing Fields.” It was a long process that kept Don, Steve, and myself up wayyyy past our bed times. Oh well. In the end, the song was sounding badass and it gives me one more to work on at home next week.
Speaking of recording at home, I finished “Just Remains.” The fucking NS/STICK sounds badass…even direct (of course, with four EMG pickups, what would you expect right). I spent several hours getting the parts down and making some really interesting fills. I always knew that when it was time to record the new songs I would be able to take the time to make bass fills that really fit my playing style and personality. It is hard to write them in practice because I do not want to take up the bands time while I try to create something challenging. That…and getting the hairy eyeball from Don LaFon is never a super fun thing either.
Anyway, to make a short story longer… we got my files and Don’s guitar files and loaded them up against the quantized drums. It was the first playback of something even remotely close to what will be on the record that I had been given the opportunity to hear….and it FUCKING ROCKED. I did, incidentally, hear a couple of parts that I should go back and tighten up, but since I am doing it all at home, it will not be a big deal.
Steve is on vacation next week, and I have five songs that I can record right now. Looks like the ball is in my court and Mr. LaFon’s. I’ll have an update week after next.
