O.K. As far as I know, we finished another song last night. Things were going well, but I left around eleven. Of course when I did leave, Darren had almost knocked out the entire composition. He only lacked a bit on the final section of the song, and it was very similar to a piece that he had already completed.
This means that we are down to the final bits of drum tracking for the second album. From my calculations as a professional, we only have two songs left for him to put the drums down on. We have another session on Sunday and I really hope that we can knock out the two selections then because Steve will be out of pocket for a couple of weeks afterwards. Unfortunately, we have to quantize all of these drum parts… hope that won’t take very long. We have eight selections to quantize. Fuck.
Don LaFon expresses his doubts that we will finish the record by our planned release date of August 28th. I, however, remain hopeful that this is possible. In fact, barring something horrid… I think that Don, Chuck, and I can have everything done by end of June. I cannot imagine it taking Don very long to record songs on an album where he has written 80% of the material. At least I hope not.
Since things are moving along nicely with the NS/STICK, I am not worried about there being a big learning curve in using it on the recording as well. In fact, with 4 EMG pick-ups it will sound extremely badass. At least…the sound quality will be badass…I suppose my actual bass lines will have to be judged by other folks than myself.
At least the hardest, or most time consuming, portion of the recording process will be done very soon. This has been the portion of the album that has put us behind schedule the most. I think Don and I will be able to make up for some lost time on our end. As for Chuck…I would be really surprised if this took more than two days for him to lay down vocals.
Well, SMC fans…that is where we sit now. Hopefully I will have great news for all of you on Sunday after our next, and Froktar willing, our final drum night for this project.
As for the horror we have faced while working or tired little balls off to bring you the latest and greatest in prog metal goodness….well, I think this picture of Lori and I from the studio last night sums it all up:
