It has taken a long, long time….and the entire scenario has gone through all kinds of bullshit (from hurricanes to child support to cracked necks to whothefuckknowswhatallelse)… but the waiting is over.
My fully functional NS/STICK is here.
For a long time there were things that I wanted to do with the bass guitar but was limited by the scope of a five or six string bass. I wanted to play solos from time to time in the songs. As any of you bass players out there that have tried this know, playing solos over distorted guitar riffs is pointless. Nobody can hear shit. Everything is muddy. I needed something that would cut through the metal… I needed something with a bit of flash and pizzaz. And most importantly I needed some god damn toys. The guitar players get all the cool shit and bass players get some of the crappiest effects ever conceived.
I knew that something with a fuck load of strings was the answer. I began searching and found a custom builder who would make me a nine string bass with two sets of pick ups so that I could route the sound to either a bass or a guitar rig (or both at the same time). This was going to run in the neighbourhood of about five grand. Damn.
Interestingly, I happened upon a fellow by the name of Don Schiff on myspace. This guy is badass and recommended the NS/STICK to me. On his recommendation I checked it out. It has eight strings instead of nine but it is set up to go to two rigs like I wanted and sits with tax, title, and license for about $2,500.00. This is good, so after much shenanigans I now have one.
I was concerned that this might be a hard transition for me, but the minute I picked it up, I blasted out “Under the Moonlight” from the first Six Minute Century album without a problem. It will take a bit to really get a grasp on the possibilities of the extra strings, but their existence does not fuck up my current abilities. Hooray.
It is almost everything I want…and as close as I can get without a custom job. The only things I would change would be to make it a nine string, add a fucking whammy bar on the lower four strings, and put a pretty flame top or quilt top finish on the top. Right now she is kinda fugly, yet awe inspiring in her own little way.
And yet I love her. It is my sword in the stone moment (frothcalibur anyone…haha). My career as a bassist will be changed forever, and I will begin to fulfill my destiny. This is the day I have waited 24 years for. I wish my father were alive to share the moment with me. I can already feel the magic coming off of the mother fucker. Sweet. Buckle your seat belts boys and girls…cuz here we go!
