So I watched a few bands play last night at the Jet Lounge here in Houston and here is some more of my thoughts on one of them.
Here is Dr. Froth’s super simple tip for taking your gig to that super important next professional level. Please for the love of baby Jesus buy one of these marvelous fucking marvels of modern engineering.
It is known as a guitar tuner. Why you would not have one is beyond me, but if you do not you NEED one. And if you have one already…USE IT FOR FUCK’S SAKE. And when do we use it boys and girls….thats right..BEFORE THE FUCKING GIG. And yes…after doing this for over twenty years I do realize that tuning emergencies can arise during a performance but BETWEEN THREE SONGS???? and trying to tune BY EAR WITH THE BASS PLAYER. Holy ballz.
It is important to remember that if you want people to care about your music as much as you do that you do everything possible to present it to them in the most professional and highest quality as you can. You are there to entertain THEM…. you are providing a service by sharing something that you have created. Why would you not want them to enjoy your creation in the best possible way. And if you don’t care about that than you have to ask yourself why you are doing this at all. If you don’t want to sound like a garage band, you need to get the garage out of your show.
And bass players… I know we don’t get all the glory we deserve, but spending the entire gig stepping on the poor guitar players dick is not in good form and is not professional at all. There is always a spot for a fill but the entire composition is not your personal playground….we are support instruments. Be a pro…know your place. If you are guilty of this than you should know better and shame on you.
I will not name names on the band in question (some of you might be surprised by this). This is just a general rant. There were people there that really love this band and my comments have nothing to do with the music itself, buy with the lack of professionalism in which is was presented. These people that love your music are what keeps your group alive and they deserve better and you should give it them.
